Announcing: 2019 Vacation Down Undah

It’s official! The Kirady family is headed to Australia!

In exactly 104 days, we’ll be hopping on a plane and saying g’day to the gorgeous land of Oz, home to Crocodile Dundee, Steve Irwin and the ever so handsome Hemsworth brothers—both of whom are invited to audition for the movie adaptation of my novel. Once I finish writing it, that is.

Leaving at the end of June for three glorious weeks, our trip will include stops in Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns (pronounced “cans” or “kehnz” – Liam, Chris, please feel free to weigh in on this).

We’ve been talking about going back to Australia for many years now. Mitch and I actually honeymooned partly in Sydney back in 2012 for five days before cruising around New Zealand. Believe me, five days wasn’t nearly long enough!

Photo taking since 2012 has definitely come a long way!

We instantly fell in love with the city, which not only inspired one of my novel’s main characters, but also sparked several discussions over the years about us moving there permanently. Mitch even interviewed for a few jobs in Australia but the opportunities and timing weren’t a right fit for us, sadly. So for now, at least while the kids are still in school, we’re staying put. That’s the plan, anyway. Who knows what can happen!

The decision to go on this vacation was partly planned for years, partly downright impulsive. We always knew we’d go back some day, we just hadn’t expected it to happen quite so…abruptly. Normally we plan things like this far in advance, sometimes years! But when, on a whim, we stumbled across an incredible deal on airfare, we just couldn’t pass it up.

After much deliberation on how best to spend our precious three weeks, we decided to stick to the east coast this time around. Although we’d eventually love to visit the southern parts of Australia including Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, there’s just not enough time for it on this trip. Oh darn, looks like we’ll just have to go back! *insert smiley face*

The Itinerary

  • Flying to Vancouver, staying 1 night.
  • Flying to Sydney, staying 5 nights.
  • Flying to Brisbane, staying 4 nights.
  • Flying to Cairns, staying 4 nights.
  • Flying back to Sydney, staying another 5 nights.
  • Flying back to Vancouver, then straight home to Ottawa (Gatineau).

We’ve already started booking some incredible outings, which at the moment include Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince in concert at the Sydney Opera House, and two full days of snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef! I can’t wait! Of course, there’ll be plenty more things to see and do, and I’ll keep you posted along the way.

There will be a separate post on the vacation itself, and another on Packing Tips for traveling to the other side of the world. Stay tuned!
